Hempcar is an alternative fuel vehicle that traveled 13,000 miles powered by hemp seed oil. The car is an unmodified Mercedes diesel wagon. The diesel engine was designed to run on vegetable oil and was exhibited at the 1900 World's Fair using peanut oil as fuel. Hempcar toured N. America from July 4 - October 4 in 2001. The car visited nearly 50 cities making appearances at festivals, fairs, parks, and government buildings. Hempcar reached an estimated 75 million people through various media outlets including CSPAN, Hot Rod magazine, The Village Voice, The Times of London and local news outlets in almost every city the car visited.
The goal of Hempcar was to promote the use of biofuels and industrial hemp. Hempcar's fuel produced about 80% less pollutants than standard petroleum diesel. Hemp is a renewable resource, but growing hemp is currently prohibited in the United States. The Hempcar tour was paid for by sponsors and donations. Viper Records was the project's largest sponosr. www.hempcar.org
