Rarely do you come across an MC who uses lyrical ability as a method to convey an underlining message with both concrete conceptual strength and cemented arguments about society, politics, racial issues, Hip Hop as a culture and Revolution without corporate compromise. But such is the case with Immortal Technique. Born in a military hospital in South America, his family came to the United States to escape the culturally devastating inflation and poverty that came as a direct result of economic imperialism caused by a collaboration between a corrupt US backed puppet democracy and corporate forces.
Since the age of 5, he has lived in Harlem-surrounded by Hip Hop culture-and so began to freestyle with friends at a young age. As he progressed to battling and writing rhymes, Technique's style began to evolve. As a grafitti artist and an active young man, Technique often found himself in beefs with other crews in NYC. At the same time he was reading books beyond the comprehension of other children his age. This contrast is exactly what composes Technique`s battle style is comprised of brutally disrespecting his opponents, and his conscious, intelligent, yet relentlessly uncompromising underground lyrics.
After attending Penn State University for two years studying as a film major, Technique was incarcerated over a physical confrontation that was initiated by a local white male. The system at his university wouldn;t allow his hearing in student court to be extended, so he was suspended for a year while the board ignored his side of the story. The court system in that rural part of Pennsylvania was more than biased in determining the extent of his guilt and was definitely motivated by racial discrimination as could be seen in the opening statements. He was forced to seek a plea bargain and eventually his codefendant crawled to the DA with a questionable story as a confession. This occurred after the codefendant's incarceration which preceded Technique's. Rather than talk to the DA and live in shame, Tech found a pitbull attorney who got the felony dropped to a misdemeanor and the 3-5 year sentence dropped to a 1-2 year sentence for the assualt charge, as well as closing other cases that were still open in NYC. In prison for a year, Tech became a machine of physical fitness and a battle MC rivaled by none.
Since his return from hell, he has used his refined lyrical abilities to destroy the competition at a series of underground venues, including Downtime Battles, Braggin` Rites, Da Cypha Battle, and hookt.com`s infamous MC battle. He also devoured his way into the finals of Rocksteady in 2000 where he tied at first and then lost in an overtime round by split decision. Most recently in September of 2001, he won the Rocksteady battle sponsored by FatBeats. Whether he wins or loses Tech keeps the point in focus, performing at several clubs and at colleges including NYU, Hunter College, Wesleyan, Penn State and Cooper Union. He has proven time and time again to be an MC that isn't just about battling (which is only one MC train), but trying to move more into recording, production, business and performing which are the other components that construct a true MC. Most recently Technique recorded and pressed over 2,000 copies of a full length album entitled, "Revolutionary Vol.1". The 59 minute creation is complete with a couple of powerful guests, interludes and a sick intro. The 16 track album is digitally Mastered and also features a hidden joint that will have people focused across the country. The astonishingly precise, politically charged cover art is also an eye opener that catches people`s attention. It`s the conceptuality of the LP and the sick beats that make this an underground classic.
Immortal Technique has opened up for Hip Hop acts such as Dead Prez, BlackThought, The Beatnuts, RUN DMC, Nice & Smooth, Jeru, KillaPriest, Cappadonna, Anti-pop Consortium, Jurrasic 5, Blackalicious, Tony Touch and others. He also has appeared in the Hip Hop magazine Mass Appeal #13. You can catch him destroying open mic's in the NYC area or traveling around doing shows across the country. The Revolution is in full swing and it's coming out of Harlem, the world isn't ready.
