The laws governing marijuana today are largely due to three very powerful Americans who were afraid they would lose tremendous amounts of money if hemp was allowed to reach it's full commercial potential. To protect their bottom line, they engaged in an all out campaign to convince the country that marijuana (which no one had ever heard of) was on the brink of ruining their lives.
William Randolph Hearst, founder of the Hearst Newspaper Chain, owner of millions of acres of trees to be used for newsprint, and inventor of the word "marijuana" (He knew no one would make hemp illegal) instructed hhis editors, who were already well versed in the field of yellow journalism, to write defaming stories about the "killer weed". Andrew Mellon, owner of Gulf Oil, Secretary of the Treasury, and the richest man in the world, was heavily invested in Lammont Du Pont's fledgling petrochemical industry. They both stood to lose big time, Mellon his money, DuPont his entive business, because you can make everything from the hemp plant that is presently made from petrochemicals.
Mellon personally designed a job for his nephew-in-law, Harry Anslinger, to eradicate the growth of hemp through the Marijuana Tax Act. Together, these three respected Americans who were aware that cutting down trees, and the petrochemical industry were harmful to the environment, with Anslinger as their point man, spearheaded an immoral and illegal movement to wipe out the competition.
New Prohibition was written in an effort to launch a campaign to re-examine the laws which wrongly prohibit hemp/marijuana. A percentage of proceeds from New Prohibition will be contributed to NORML and other organizations in the reform movement.
Hopefully, as in the past, together we can make a change. Thanks for listening, Jonathan Stuart
